An Open Letter to Homophobes

This is something I wrote a while ago, but it seems a good thing to put here on my blog, so as to give you an idea of what I'm about.

Dear anti-gay bigots and self righteous moralists,

You fail to comprehend the immense harm that has been done through your prejudicial puritanism. Likewise, you either remain ignorant or ignore the immense good that has come from those who partake in what you are so quick to deem an abomination. For simplicity's sake, I shall direct you to the case that resonates most with me as a nerd.

Alan Turing was the founder of modern computer science. A mathematical genius, his work on information theory made the devices with which you now spread your hateful chauvinism possible. Yet beyond his immense contributions to human knowledge and technology, Dr. Turing's exceptional breakthroughs in cryptography were crucial to the allied victory in World War II. How did the Allies repay Turing, a hero who incidentally was also homosexual? When his sexuality was discovered, the British government proceeded to revoke his security clearance and force him to undergo chemical treatment to reduce libido, as he was guilty of "gross indecency." One of the greatest geniuses of all time proceeded to commit suicide upon a cyanide laced apple.

Ladies and gentlemen, comrades and friends, this is where the irrational prejudice spawned from the bowels of ancient texts leads us. Death and depression is brought upon not only the innocent, but the most productive, influential, and intelligent members of society. Who can say what new insight and innovation would have emerged had Turing lived in a society that accepted him for who he was?

Sincerely,

Quantum Tuba
